So now that I no longer have my truck I'm needing a trailer that I can tow behind the jeep. I see Ft. Lewis is going to auction off a few M101a trailers. They are just 6' wide and My jeep's track width is just under 6'.  I'm most likely going to use the trailer to haul the camping gear around, the ocasional dump run and other household uses so I don't plan to get to extreme with it. The M101A is a bit heavy (I am comparing it to a M416 jeep trailer)  but for that price you can not really lose. Not too much work and it can even be a dump trailer for home use.

What are you going to use to tow it?

Well instead of scoring a M101A1 trailer, I managed to snag a m416....even better. For a 1966 trailer it's in great shape. Just a little surface rust and the floor is in good shape with no holes. It needs a new paint job and the cheapo bedliner is starting to peel off. It's already wired for 12volts and the guy even threw in the pintle hook for my jeep.

 Good purchase. The M416 is a much better trailer for hauling behind the jeep.  When I bought my RTT from Todd he helped me mount it on the trailer with some brackets I had fabricated. If you would like, I can send you photos of the mounting I used and a pattern for the brackets.  The RTT would have been way too high to put on the vehicle but works great on the trailer.

That would be great Morris...not that a tent is in my budget this year...but it would be cool to see.

I mounted the extra spare for the pinz under the trailer. The trailer has a spring over conversion that was done before I purchased it, the guy wanted it to ride level with his jeep.    There is no spare for the trailer but I have a can of instant fill stuff for that. I had the first set of brackets made from 5052 1/8'' alu but the vibrations offroad fractured one of them. Then had a set of brackets made from 1/8'' steel plate and have had no problems. The brackets are backed by a plate inside the bed of the trailer as the bed wall is not made for that kind of load. I used nylock nuts on the bolts inside the bed. The RTT rests on 1'' steel pipe secured to the brackets with 1/2'' all thread and nylock nuts on the outside face.

edit:  there is a bushing inside the pipe that keeps the 1/2'' all thread centered.

Started tearing into it this weekend. Got it all pretty much sanded and all the little rust spots taken care of. I think for now I'm going to hold off on the frame off resto, I'm going to need to use the trailer this year.. Morris, did your's come with that cover? if not do you know of a source for them?

I bought a tarp at Federal Army/Navy Surplus (2112 First Ave., Seattle) and added grommets to the edge and 1/4'' rope to tie it down. I think the tarp was about $9 or so. It is quite water resistant, made it through several rains and even had puddles on top of it in my yard in Suquamish.  The front and rear hooks are similar to ones on my Pinzgauer but the original ones on the trailer will work very well.

The original stock tarps for the M416 trailer can run upwards of $125. Way too much for me to put into a cover for a trailer to go camping.

Several surplus stores may carry tarps but Federal was the closest to me and I did enjoy the ferry ride to Seattle, we always made a day of it and went to a good restaurant down by the market.

wow, those guys at G503 LOVE their trailers...cool site with some cool info. I did find a post about a guy that used a fiberglass toneau lid from a ford ranger splash that looked to fit perfect...

 Yeah, not only do they LOVE them but some are very particular about keeping the trailers in their stock condition. Some are not at all in favor of folks like us taking them and morphing them into something else. Glad you went to that site, much to be learned from those folks.

My friend with the Canadian trailer has mounted a Magiolina RTT on his. As the Canadian trailer is smaller than the US M416, his RTT fits perfectly and he uses it as the lock-down top. He did a fantastic job, his pinz is also in better condition than most any I have seen. There is a photo of his pinz and trailer along with mine.

I finally got the trailer painted. I'm going to need it next weekend so I figured I'd just shoot it like the Army paints their stuff. Just sanded down all the rust spots and washed it pretty good. I let it dry out for a couple of days and painted it today with some Krylon Rust tough primer. It's not the prettiest job but it's just an old military trailer that I'm using as a off road utility trailer. I figure with the primer, if I get a scratch just touch it up...
