OK... This will be a slow project, but I do have enough things in the wings to get started on a build thread here.  I posted earlier about what type of project I should tackle with this vehicle, and I think I've figured out a good balance between reality and dreams, nice and not too nice, drivable and fun to work on.  I'll detail this in a later post, but to start, I have a question!

Is there anyone in Portland who would trade some simple, quick welding for a six pack of the beer of their choice and maybe some photography work or a print?  Here is a representation of what I want to do: Take two short angle irons, weld them to the front frame crossmember and put the back bolts of the winch mounting plate into the ends of them, the front bolts would go to the bumper.

Here is my silly drawing of the front crossmember of the Series Rover. Actually, this drawing is good, but it isn't exactly to scale, and it should show two more bolt holes to the rear.  The front would connect to the bumper so the winch is sitting half on the bumper, half off, but fully on the two angle irons.  I think this is the type of job I could literally figure out how to do myself even though I have never welded before!  But, what do I know?  Nothing...  If you've seen a Series frame and bumper set up, you will know exactly what you are looking at here.  If not, but you know how to weld, I bet you could figure it out instantly once looking at the truck itself.

Wasn't someone proposing a welding tech session?

I got some work done the last two days -- it's a big accomplishment for me!

  1. Rear seat in. Needs seat belts now. It's for the kids, they have plenty of leg room, and it would be good for an adult for a short ride.  It has enough room behind for my tools and winch bag.  It's from a CJ Jeep.
  2. Winch on, but not connected, and it needs a mount to the frame -- basically just getting it out of the garage! -- but I did hook it up and test it and wind the wire properly.
  3. Fixed the starter -- actually, just sort of did some work on it to make it engage correctly.
