I've got the Cobra 75. It is decent for use in a Discovery driving 65mph down the highway. The little speaker has more volume than you would expect.

I have the 75 and it was installed in my 4runner before I sold it. I still have the CB, just haven't taken the time to install it in my Cruiser. It's worked great for me the few times I've had the opportunity to actually use it.

I have the Cobra 75 and it's a nice radio and the speaker is plenty loud enough, except for on the freeway with mud tires and windows down. There is a standard 1/8" speaker jack on the main box where you can plug in headphones or an auxiliary speaker if needed. I've heard people say FRS is "better or just as good," but on the trips I've done with FRS the range has been much less, even out in the desert, than I was used to with a tuned CB. I was surprised out on the Alvord Playa that the FRS range was really lousy! Some day I'll get a ham.... Maybe that's a good project for winter. I know I said that last fall :-)

I have an SWR meter I can share. It's super easy to use and makes a big difference.

As far as theft, I have had various CBs in my trucks for years without a problem. They are so cheap and not really in demand with car prowlers these days that theft shouldn't be a concern.

So, bringing this one back really quickly before it gets lost in cyberspace...

Is the final verdict that the Cobra 75 is worth the $25 or is it redundant if you have FRS? On overland trips organized here, do people use CB, HAM, or FRS mostly?

Gabriel- My .02:
Cobra 75- if you can get it at $25, Sweet- nice to have a CB either way if you don't spend a bunch
FRS seems to be the way to go (short of HAM) on the outings I have been on with NWOS- I will be getting some soon.
I like the FRS as its more mobile, allows a user to be away from the vehicle and still communicate- on the snow run this would have been helpful as some of us were on foot quite a bit

HAM is the ideal, though, and its a 2009 goal for me

I have a Uniden (pc68xl whatever it's worth) and is has worked well for several years. I bought another brand when I first got a CB, might have been a Cobra (?), anyway, whatever it is be sure it can handle the bumps and thumps of offroad travel. Biggest issue for me has been soldered connections coming loose inside the box.

Expensive or cheap they don't seem to be items that someone wants bad enough to steal it, but then my rig doesn't have lots of bling. I have thought about hubcap spinners though, but they don't really catch the eye in OD.

Morris-

You really need to get the grenade and Pepsi holder combo! I hear it's handy for waking up inattentive drivers.

I have the (dummy) grenade but I took the rifle holders off when I first got the pinz (they are real knee knockers when bouncing around the rocks and ruts). The pinz comes with two holders side by side. I traded one for a rim for my extra spare tire that is mounted under the trailer. The other is in a box. I just hang the grenade on the screen behind the seats.

I do have the K31 carbine that is stock Swiss military issue but have never mounted it in the pinz since it is a working issue rifle. Now that would really get the traffic moving or maybe stopped altoghther.
