Nice work, Joe. I think most people are intimidated to get into HAM radio simply because of the test. That is, until they realize how easy it is to pass the technician test after using hamtestonline.com. Like you said, you sit at the computer for a few hours on the site studying and when you actually take the test you simply can't believe its that easy.

Just upgraded from General to Amateur Extra...passed my exam this afternoon. Maybe I will put up an antenna someday. Where did I hear THAT before?

Bump for the upcoming cold season. Nows the time to spend the few hours it takes to study and get your amateur radio license. Given how cheap and easy it is to get licensed, and how used handheld radios are available for under $100 we are going to start phasing out FRS. Amateur radio will be emphasized as the primary means of communicating vehicle to vehicle in this group. Craig

Danny - think a few evenings, not a month long or winter goal. Putting it in perspective, there is a pool of 200 questions, all of them are published along with the answers and the test is multiple choice. I'd have killed for that in college when cramming the night before a mid-term. This is the sort of thing where you just need to pick a date/time when you are going to take it then do a little studying the 2-3 nights before. Don't make it out to be something harder than it is.

I am way behind the times. I was studying the book hard last year, then other priorities took place. Plus I still have the mount the manin unit of the 875D. I have the faceplate mounted, and also have to run the coax.

nah Danny, You can do it! A business trip is the perfect venue to get the studying done. I'd buy the book to read on the plane but skip the electrical engineering stuff. Then do the online practice tests at your hotel and remember the answers to the electrical stuff. The electrical stuff is good info but you can come back to it later.

Just pick a time/location to get tested in November and get it done. In my experience if you say, "I'll study the book and when ready I'll go get tested" you'll never get licensed. The easy way is to: 1. Pick a time/location to get tested: http://www.arrl.org/arrlvec/examsearch.phtml 2. Go to http://hamtestonline.com and start learning (free to get started) 3. Go in and get tested even if hamtestonline.com says you are only at 80%. Todd's right. Forget understanding stuff. Just memorize the answers, get your license, then ask questions as you begin using the radio. Again.. I'd like to see HAM be the group standard beginning as soon as January. I'm personally done using FRS and won't use it anymore even if it means I'm talking to myself on the HAM radio.

There is a two day class with a test at the end for the Technician License on November 7th & 8th, 9am to 4pm. It's offered through the Renton Emergency Preparedness Academy. If you're interested PM me your e-mail and I'll forward you the flyer. I assume you can find info at rentonwa.gov as well. I've done a (very) little bit of studying and was curious where I stood. I took one of the online practice tests and passed pretty easily. I plan on going to take the test in the next month or so. It was not that tough. A lot of it is just common sense and basic technical knowledge. Peter

Ham Radio Outlet on Hwy 99 in Tigard has the book. You can look at the radios there as well and get frothy.

So this year I'll try your advice. I sent off an email looking for a spot in the Nov 18th class down in Olympia at the Red Cross building. Really wish it had been the 17th as that's the day I have to get CPR recertified at the exact same location, oh well.

Traded in all my project vehicles for my 2009 Xterra, not an ounce of buyers remorse.
