I'm interested in picking up a couple of APRS trackers that can be strapped to the outside of other peoples rigs.  These would use my call-sign and would not require others to have an Amateur Radio license.  This would allow those in the group with APRS to track those in the group without APRS when travelling together.

In particular I've been eyeing the Byonics AIO (All In One), which is the GPS, radio, etc all shoved into a small Pelican case.  http://www.byonics.com/microtrak/mtaio.php

Anyone have any experience with these?

Is there any benefit in getting them programmed on a non-standard APRS frequency.  That is, do those of you (Todd/Ed) that have used APRS on expedition beacon on the standard APRS frequency or do you use a separate frequency?  Using the standard frequency seems like it would be cool as there is a chance that others (wives, other NWOS members) could follow our progress via an igate (APRS radio tower to Internet gateway).

Thoughts?

Craig

We have always used off frequencies for trail stuff. I would reccomend it if you will be using multiple devices with your call sign attached. no need to broadcast all that on the digipeaters and raise questions.
