I have been slowly assembling my communications and navigation equipment for install later this spring or early summer. My latest score is a slimmed down version of something we use at the Fire District, the Cradlepoint MBR1200. This is a mobile 3G-4G router that also broadcasts Wifi while away from the vehicle. The router accepts pretty much all 3G-4G data cards and is very simple to program, install and use. I had it up and running last night and it is pretty impressive. How am I planning to use it? I wanted to have some internet connectivity while on the road for checking weather, doing trail research, updating a Blog, sharing pictures and even an email here and there. It is also tailored for VOIP use and functions very well in that capacity. Skype is a great on it as well. In addition, should something go wrong, I might have a chance at emergency assistance. Lastly, I wanted to be able to remove the laptop from the rig and still have internet access while out of the rig. Granted, this is all based upon having cellular data signals. It has been my experience that more times than not, I have signal.. this even includes many times on the trail way out in the sticks and all the time out in the dunes. I think this will make a nice addition to my computer setup and my radio and should make for a pretty reliable connection back to the homebase when out on the trail. When I do the install I will shoot some pics and get them posted so you can see how it all comes together and interacts. Dustin |
