All,
I like to fly fish and often find myself setting up a base camp beside a river/stream/creek in a remote location, typically along a Forest Service road in northern Idaho and Montana. These areas are usually in deep twisting canyons and, from my limited experience, not conducive to reaching out to a repeater on VHF/UHF.
For basecamp emergency comms I am thinking of setting up a dipole antenna configured for NVIS (Near Vertical Incidence Skywave) in the 40 and 80 meter bands. A google search offers various citations on antenna construction and other details. Does anyone here have any experience with NVIS and do you think this is a reasonable approach for basecamp emergency communications?

Thanks,
Jim H

Jim, you should check out the Buddipole users group. The Buddipole is a nice portable dipole that breaks down and is easily stored and is easy to use on the 40 meter and 80 meter bands. If you get on the users group, you'll find a wealth of knowledge on doing portable HF.
