Alert | Hey Chad. Is that Goler Wash in Pic # 2? We really enjoyed Death Valley this year over the Holidays. We went over Mengel Pass and down into the Panamint Valley one day. | | "Flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." - Douglas Adams

Alert | FWIW the head gasket problems on the FZJ's are not as bad as people make out - there is an updated HG available that as far as I know has yet to fail on an 80. The old ones seem to have failed at a rate of about 12% from what I can remember from the last ih8mud survey.
I gotta say I'm smitten with my '97 FZJ80 - fun truck so far, and zero buyers remorse.
I am happy I picked it up in So Cal though - no rust at all makes working on it a LOT more enjoyable.

Alert | BTW, Common problem when lifting the 100-series UZJ100 with IFS (Ind. Front Susp.): Installing the OME lift torsion bars changes the front driveshaft angles enough to cause CV boot leakage/failure. There's a Slee Offroad diff. drop kit to minimize this premature failure. It consists of a new front crossmember and various spacers to reduce the change in front pinion angles. I didn't install the diff. drop at the same time as the lift and four boots later can say, DO IT! The two outers first leaked, and then after being re-clamped, split and failed completely. I did all four as a precaution. | | "Flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." - Douglas Adams

Alert | | Joe- is there a manual hub conversion? I did one on the 4runner specifically to reduce cv joint wear during the majority highway miles. So far it's also gained me 2 mpg | | Everett, Reno, Astoria, BedStuy, Greenpoint, Bayfield, Brazos, Albuquerque

Alert | Now on my 12th Land Cruiser........ The Tennesee licensed FZJ80 was just purchased last month in Knoxville and drove to Portland with no issues. This 80 series was advertised on IH8MUD.COM classifieds for a week and had over 1000 hits of interest. It has original driveline with 135K on the odo, ARB front, Warn (unfortunately) 12K winch, PIAA beams, Slee sliders, Hanna Quality bumper/tire carrier, Slee/OME 4" lift with 315 MTR's, Slee wiring upgrade for headlamps, Factory F/R electric diff locks, CDL switch upgrade, Sony/Pioneer upgrade, interior lamp LED upgrades. The FJ40 on the incline has been to Moab 4 times, Rubicon twice and the our showpiece for our shop Land Cruiser of Portland since I bought the 40 in 1997. Too many mods to list here. Alert | I'm on my 3rd 80 series LandCruiser and still have the 2nd one. Great daily driver with their coil springs, ABS and quality seats. No rust problems on the 80 series - that's an issue mainly on the 40s and to a much lesser degree on the 60s but even those were what you'd expect for their era. When a vehicle is still on the road after 25-40 years the body simply isn't possible to preserve and maintain like a powertrain. The 4.5L FZJ80 engine got caught in the mandate to change away from asbestos in head gaskets and they need to be switched to the newer gasket design eventually. My total miles driven in 80 series is around 350,000 miles and one of the best aspects of them is they are easy to work on and the parts are cheap and durable. Great trucks and if you look for an 80 it is worth finding one with the optional full locker system.
Nice to see a thread on a certain make just to expose it to others - great idea.

Thanks for chiming in Doug.
Some vehicles are more resistant to corrosion than others. In the case of Toyota, I saw a lot of rust on the bodies that would need to be addressed if I was to do a rolling restoration. In contrast, an old Land Rover has an aluminum body that rarely shows any signs of rust (though they have other problems of their own, and the rear cross member of the frame has rust issues). Craig

Alert | Before you jump on the LC ride, imagine this -- you wake up on Saturday morning and think, "Hmmm, should I work on the truck today, or go out and see some country?" Then you remember "Oh, I bought a Toyota, so nothing on the truck needs to be fixed." Now you have no choice -- you have to pack a lunch, load up the dog, fill up with fuel and GO SOMEWHERE! You are going to put wear on your tires, brakes and other consumable parts, be a few hundred miles closer to needing an oil change, be out the cost of a tank of fuel, spend a day at risk of getting hit by an uninsured driver, you won't be able to drink any alcohol because you're driving, you'll have to check the dog for ticks, and the truck will need a wash. We Land Rover owners will spend the day in a nice dry garage, with plenty of beer, and no unecessary risks or expenses. I'm feeling pretty darn good about my Land Rover right now, I can tell you!
